Coin collector knowledge & skills Coin Grading Workshop 101
March 25th, 2020 7:00PM at Le30sou
NUMISMATIC INFORMATION SESSION
with François Rufiange
Timing: Presentation: 30 min, Workshop: 60 min
This presentation explains in depth the terms «relief, wear, grade and grading levels» as they apply to coins. Using high resolution pictures, you will study coin wear going from mint state (new) to a very low grade (very worn). Following the presentation, we will carry on with the Coin Grading Workshop.
This most popular workshop is focused on the relative state/ wear of a coin compared to another. This workshop is done in teams of 2 or 3 collectors. Each team is given a set of coins (let’s say a set of 8 coins, 1 cent, Edward VII) and is asked to place them in order, from the most worn to the least worn. Once the team reaches a consensus, the monitor reviews the answers and provides advice.
The workshop includes 20 sets of coins of various degree of difficulty totaling 124 coins! The more experienced collectors can attempt to assign a grade to each coin.
Needless to say, bring your loupes!
The cost of this activity is $25 per person and the number of places is limited to 15.
