Louis XV

Louis XV named the “Beloved”, born in Versailles on February 15, 1710 and died May 10, 1774 in the same city, is a king of France and Navarre. Member of the House of Bourbon, he reigns over the kingdom of France from September 1, 1715 to May 10, 1774. He was the only king of France to be born and die at the Palace of Versailles.

Accession to the Throne

Orphaned at the age of two, Duke of Anjou and dolphin of France from March 8, 1712 to September 1, 1715, he succeeded his great-grandfather Louis XIV at the age of five. His power is then delegated to his cousin, the Duke of Orleans, proclaimed “Regent of the Kingdom”, on September 2, 1715, until February 15, 1723, date of the entry of the young king in his fourteenth year and his majority , where he officially takes over the government.

His reign

The only survivor of the royal family stricto sensu, he enjoyed at the beginning of his reign a great popular support, which earned him the nickname of “Beloved” in 1744 after an illness that nearly prevailed in Metz. Over the years, however, his lack of firmness, the denigration of his action by parliamentarians and a part of the court nobility, the incessant intrigues involving his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour, and his misconduct in his private life lead to the disappearance his popularity, so much so that his death – of smallpox – provoked festivities in Paris, as in the wake of that of Louis XIV.

Under his reign, however, France had great military successes on the European continent and acquired the Duchy of Lorraine and the Duchy of Bar, as well as Corsica. On the other hand, it loses control of much of its colonial empire, in favor of British colonial rule: especially New France in America, as well as its preponderance in India.
